Dilwale: No heart & Soul in this Dilwale

DilwaleRecipe of a hit movie, sign up a hit pair from the past, sign up two new actors from the current lot, to support sign a bandwagon of comedians, sign up a successful director, shoot in exotic foreign locations, show stylish cars and blow it up and at the end take the story idea from an old Bollywood successful movie and put some scenes in the name of script, and you have a hit Bollywood movie dish ready to earn 300 to 400 crores….

Well I guess this is how “Dilwale” was made. Rohit Shetty completely looses the plot with this movie and attempts a love story which is definitely not his forte and he fails miserably.

With a clichéd story line of two brothers Raj (Shahrukh Khan) and Veer (Varun Dhawan) who own a garage in Goa modifying cars and live a quite life of fun and bhaichara, till Veer falls in love with Ishita (Kriti Sanon) who happens to the sister of Meera (Kajol). Both Meera and Raj who have a history 15 years back when Raj was Kali a gangster in Bulgaria. The young couple Veer and Ishita now need to re-unite the warring lovers Raj and Meera, so that they can get married. How they unite the warring couple is what the movie is all about.

Written by Yunus Sajawal, the screenplay looks too dated and extremely predictable, even the so called twists that have been incorporated. There are glaring loop holes in the movie, like both Veer & Ishita were young enough to understand what was happening 15 years back, but they are shown to be completely ignorant, I guess Yunus took the proverb “Ignorance Is Bliss” too seriously. The whole premise is too much of 80’s masala. Some of the characters like the comedians Mani (Johnny Lever), Oscar (Sanjay Mishra) and the local gangster King (Boman Irani) all look as an afterthought which was put as comedy ka tadka in the otherwise bland story. None of the characters are well etched including the lead pair, rather the characters of Veer and Ishita look like glorified support cast. In the climax Yunus completely looses it with “No punch” at all, something which is expected in a Rohit Shetty movie. Rather the climax looks too rushed as if the makers were in hurry to wrap up the movie or were not sure how to wrap the movie. In a nutshell the writing is extremely weak…

Dialogues by Farhad-Sajid does not help either, rather it is too childish and amateurish. Some of the jokes in the name of comedy are so clichéd that you will hardly laugh. Even the so called love scenes between the lead pair are without the punch and passion.

It is only Shahrukh Khan who carries the movie on his shoulders. His portrayal of Raj/Kali is the only decent act of the movie. Well as in his previous movie, Shahrukh plays himself and NOT the character. Kajol as Meera repeats her act of the vivacious character which she has been doing since her DDLJ days. I still feel Kajol has the talent but she just does not do anything different. Rather I would love to see Shahrukh and Kajol in a matured love story. Varun Dhawan as Veer hams throughout the movie in the name of the comedy. Rather this is Varun’s weakest performance till date. Kriti Sanon as Ishita has nothing much to do other than looking good, but still she registers her presence in the scenes which includes her, with her confidence. I would love to see Kriti in a much more defined role. Johhny Lever as Mani bhai brings some much needed laughs with his mallu act. Sanjay Mishra as Oscar though is completely wasted but still manages some laughs. Varun Sharma as Sidhu is repetitive of his Fukrey act. Boman Irani as King is one of the worst performance of the movie. Both Vinod Khanna and Kabir Bedi are wasted….

Cinamatography by Dudley manages to give the glamour quotient to the movie. Music by Pritam is good with some melodious tracks like “Janam Janam” and immensely popular “Mohe tu Rang De Gerua”…

“Dilwale” is undoubtedly Rohit Shetty’s weakest movie till date; it completely lacks the Rohit Shetty touch and does not look like a Rohit Shetty genre of movie. It lacks in high octane action and it lacks in humour, two of Rohit Shetty’s forte. I think Rohit should stick to his kind of comedy like “Golmaal” which is pure entertainment and not venture in genres like love story which according to me is definitely NOT his cup of tea….

I will go with 2 & a half stars….

Review : Singham Returns

Singham Returns: A complete Rohit Shetty masala fare

There are some movies which defy all logic but still you enjoy it and “Singham Returns” is one such movie…
The movie begins with a startling message “There are only 47000 people employed in the Mumbai Police force to protect 1.85 cr civilians of Mumbai”, Review Singham Returnsthis message actually started me thinking. Well this movie is Rohit Shetty’s tribute to Mumbai Police.

This time Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) is posted in Mumbai where he finds himself in between political tussle between Guruji’s (Anupam Kher) party and their coalition party headed by Prakash Rao (Zakir Hussain). Prakash Rao has a strong backing in the form of Baba (Amol Gupte) who runs an Ashram which finances Prakash Rao’s party. Things turn worse for Singham when a constable of his team is found dead in an ambulance with heaps of cash. How Singham solves the mystery of his constable’s death and brings law and order in Mumbai forms the rest of the movie.

Story by Rohit Shetty tries to touch upon issue from corrupt politicians with black money to God man and politician nexus, and the role of a policeman and their sacrifices which keep the civilians safe. Screenplay by Yunus Sajawal is packed with clichéd situations of how police are puppets in the hands of the politicians, but where Sajawal’s screenplay differs is the way the police is shown to solve the issue, though a bit too farfetched especially the climax, still it conveys a very strong message. Some sequences stand out like the dead constable’s wife is forced to work as a domestic help to run the household expenses or when a women lambasts Singham when he beats his son for taking money from the corrupt politician. I thought the villain’s characters were too much of a caricature especially Baba’s. Overall the screenplay is tight and crisp but with enough cinematic liberties.

What elevates the screenplay are the impactful dialogues by Sajid-Farhad, some of the dialogues are clearly for the gallery and gets enough whistles.

Ajay Devgn as Bajirao Singham again gives an impactful performance or should I say a seeti maar performance with his trademark dialogue from the previous Singham “Atta Mazhi Satakli”, well in some scenes Ajay goes a bit overboard but looking at the response of the crowd I should say it was worth it. Kareena as Avni has nothing much to do other than looking pretty and mouthing some comic dialogues, I think Kareena should take a break from the bubbly roles that she is portraying since “Jab We Met” days. Amol Gupte’s portrayal as Baba goes overboard and he hams all throughout the movie. Zakir Hussain as Prakash Rao is a caricature, which even an actor of his caliber could not salvage as the writing is weak. The rest of the ensemble cast Anupam Kher, Mahesh Manjrekar, Ashwini Kalsekar, Dayanand Shetty, Sharat Saxena, Savita Joshi do a good job, though I felt Govind Namdeo as Singham’s father is wasted.

Action is a highlight of all Rohit Shetty movies, and this movie does not disappoint. Action designed by Rohit himself in collaboration with Jai Singh Nijjar and Suneil Rodrigues is filled with cars being blown, people flying and enough fisticuffs to keep the adrenalin rush and Dolby Sound blaring. Overall the action is typical Rohit Shetty style which an audience expects from his movies.

Cinematography by Dudley captures Mumbai well and the aerial shots and action sequences are worth a mention. Music is a big disappointment although it had an impressive lineup of composers from Jeet Ganguli, Ankit Tiwari, Meet Bros and Yo Yo Honey Singh. Rather Yo Yo Honey Singh’s song “Atta Majhi Satakli” sounds like a rip off from “Lungi Dance”.

Rohit Shetty clearly plays to the gallery and the masses and gives a paisa vasool entertainer worth an addition to the 100 crore club. I will go with 3 stars….

Review : Chennai Express

Chennai Express: A De-railed Train

Combination of Shahrukh Khan, Rohit Shetty & Deepika Padukone was a right recipe for a sure shot entertainment. But Chennai Express disappoints and How….

The very premise of the movie is hackneyed with glimpses of DDLJ & Jab we Met . Rahul (Shahrukh Khan)  a 40 year old bachelor who embarks on chennai-expressa journey to Rameswaram to submerge his grandfather’s ashes , but in his journey  he meets Meena (Deepika Padukone) in the train “Chennai Express” who is the daughter of the local Don of Konnam village Durgeshwara Azhagusundaram (Satyaraj). Durgeshwara wants his daughter to be married to Tangaballi (Nikitan Dheer) against Meena’s wishes and she runs away from her home and meets Rahul in the train. The journey of Rahul & Meena forms the crux of the plot.

Story & Screenplay by Yunus Sajawal is very clichéd and repetitive. The screenplay is neither a complete love story neither a comedy. Dialogues by Farhad-Sajid do not help either and lacks in humor and becomes monotonous after some time. Though it gives you some sequences which make you smile but then that is it. You keep on waiting for that typical Rohit Shetty Comic moment but it never comes. Another problem is, that the Tamil dialogues does not have subtitles and audiences like me keep wondering what is happening on the screen.

Shahrukh Khan really needs to re-invent himself. He is good but not excellent. His performance borderlines between hamming and good acting. Deepika is pleasant but her accent as a Tamilian is inconsistent. Other actors look more like amateur actors and are over the top.

Music by Vishal-Shekhar is very average and there is no memorable tune in the movie. The choreography by Farah Khan (Titli) & Chinni Prakash (Kashmir tu) are lavish and good.

Rohit Shetty ‘s direction is confusing. You keep wondering whether Rohit wanted to make a comedy or a love story. I think even he was confused coz you miss the Rohit Shetty magic which we have seen in his previous movies like the Golmaal trilogy or Bol Bachchan or All the Best.

This is definitely Rohit Shetty’s  average movie and  I will go with 2 & a Half stars…
